This little project replaced a single prefabricated garage with a 38 sqm self-contained detached annexe, and was granted planning permission in 2020. The annexe would be occupied by the elderly client, allowing her daughter’s family to move to the village and live in the main house. The two buildings retain a close and secure relationship, surrounded by a mature garden.
The timber structure and walls were designed on a 610mm grid to suit the module of a sheet of plywood, minimising waste, and capable of being fully dismantled. Cladding, internal walls and built-in furniture were all in sustainable timber. Wood-fibre insulation provides thermal mass.
