Stephen Macbean Architect is a small design studio, driven to deliver refined, purposeful work.
The practice formed in 2015, in East Sussex, after Stephen held senior roles at the offices of Michael Squire, Michael and Patty Hopkins, Richard Rogers, Grimshaw, David Chipperfield and HOK on projects ranging from company headquarters, airports, train stations, housing and civic buildings.
Having honed and proven his skills in major projects, Stephen is now bringing those – along with intimacy – to smaller but similarly loved ones. He retains the rigour, design clarity and strategic thinking that distinguished these practices, and an appetite for invention which is reflected in his award-winning entries for RIBA ideas competitions.
The studio works on new and old buildings at a more personal scale, often in sensitive locations. It values a collaborative design process with clients and consultants, enjoying problem solving by exploring a range of ideas and propositions that lead to an appropriate response to any brief. We strive for spatial clarity and material quality, underpinned by environmentally responsible and responsive principles, to produce well-mannered buildings with lasting value.
