A project to replace a former potter’s studio with a 3-bedroom house in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Planning permission was granted in 2022.
The half-acre site slopes gently down to a stream and is characterised by mature oak, beech and yew trees. The location for the new house avoids all root protection areas and thereby benefits from good sunlight in an otherwise shaded plot.
The design reflects the character of the original building with its double-height living space and exposed timber structure. A generous home office is at first floor, overlooking the living space below. It is conceived as a CLT structure with natural insulation and timber cladding; a ground-source heat pump will provide all heating and hot water.
